Businesses in the 600 block of Main Street called about having "electrical issues" around 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19, the Town of Reading said in a statement.

The businesses reported issues like a burned surge protector, electrical smells and flickering lights. Initial reports also indicated a traffic light was out, the statement said.

Power was cut to eight businesses in total and it is expected to be shut off indefinitely. The cause of the issue is currently unknown.

Main Street in Reading Square was shut down from Woburn Street to Haven Street as a result. Motorists were being advised to seek alternate routes.

While the issue is believed to be isolated to Reading Center, residents and businesses should report any issues by calling the Reading Municipal Light Department at 781-942-6598.
